REPRESENTASI PERAN MARI KANEKO PADA FILM WINTER ELEGY DALAM PERSPEKTIF SEMIOTIKA ROLAND BARTHES

This study analyzes how Mari Kaneko is shown in the film Winter Elegy using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The film is a drama from Indonesia and Japan, showing Mari Kaneko as a gentle but strong Japanese woman who faces personal and social problems. The study uses a qualitative method by observing the film, reading related texts, and interviewing people. The analysis looks at several scenes of Mari using Barthes' three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The results show that Mari is shown as a woman with Japanese values like patience, politeness, and self-sacrifice. At the basic (denotative) level, she appears as kind and beautiful. On the deeper (connotative) level, she shows the image of an Asian woman who is calm but strong. On the myth level, her character reflects a patriarchal system that puts women below men, but still shows their emotional strength and influence. This research helps in understanding how films show meaning through images and symbols, especially about women’s roles.
